I did the copywriting for our senior graphic design show at TCU, the theme of which was ‘Perception’. The project included an intro paragraph, as well as biographies for each senior. You will find the copy reproduced below, or to experience ‘Perception’ in 3D, visit www.tcugraphicdesign.org.

Perception: 2012 TCU Senior Graphic Design Show

These designers view it all a little differently, each drawing from their own unique experiences. Maybe they have a different take on what everyone else sees. Or maybe they are the ones creating it.

Are you ready to have your perception challenged?

Meet the Illusionists:

Kaley was ten when she shot her first gun. Today, her precision and spot-on aim serve her well both in the deer blind and the studio. Whether confronted with a brand identity, ad campaign, or package design, Kaley’s solutions are always on the mark. After all, she can’t be stopped once she gets a goal in the crosshairs.

Kristin’s weapon of choice is an x-acto, wielded machete-style. Don’t let her kind face fool you—whether she is slicing through stubborn matte board or hacking her way through the Guatemalan forests, Kristin is not one to back down. She is passionate about using her design to bring change, and hopes to work at a non-profit one day.

Lauren wants to swim with the sharks—both the kinds with fins and the kind with suits. She joined us from the far-off waters of Washington D.C. with big design dreams and an improbable love for her fanged friends of the deep. Four years later, no pond can contain this big fish. Traditional and classic designs may be her style, but her work always has a little bite.

Alex once crashed a Vespa in Florence and fell out of a tree in Rome—all in the same day. The way she sees it, there’s no such thing as too much adventure, and a creative approach is always right around the corner, waiting to be discovered. Geared up with her strong sense for conceptual advertising and a knack for witty copy, Alex doesn’t anticipate slowing down any time soon.

Julie’s always cooking up a storm. Whether in the kitchen or at her laptop, she loves to experiment with different ingredients. Instead of caffeine, Julie totes her water bottle to keep her hydrated during long hours in the lab. This self-sufficient designer won’t be draining the office coffee pot. Instead, her quirky and fun-loving personality brings laughter and lots of baked goods to those necessary late nights.

Kandace is used to being called MVP. She’s a pro at swinging a bat, but she’s an all-star when it comes to design. With her problem solving skills and competitive nature, she is ready to play in the big leagues. Whether it’s on the diamond or in the design studio, Kandace knows how to knock it out of the park.

Briana won’t have Christmas without Clark Griswold. She can quote the entirety of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, or, come to think of it, any movie she has ever seen. She can also spot Comic Sans from a mile away. Thanks to that knack for detail, Briana is a designer who creates one flawless piece after another.

Brett went to space and back when he was five, and would have gone again had his parents not thrown away the cardboard. Years later, his active imagination serves him well in the arenas of designing, coding, filming and preparing for the next zombie apocalypse. You could say he is the renaissance man of the modern day.

Diana became a successful entrepreneur in fourth grade when she began selling Barbie doll outfits to the neighborhood nine year olds. This resourceful designer has managed to put herself through school while juggling kids and a job—a challenging feat for even the most skillful acrobat.

Nicole’s fiery red hair is her ticket to the annual Redhead Festival in the Netherlands. That is just one of the many adventures on her bucket list. Her daring use of pattern and color in design helps her stand out in the crowd and ensures a new adventure every time.

Sansui is a company that sells Japanese gardening products to Western consumers. The word means ‘landscape’ in Japanese, or literally ‘mountain and water.’

Sho Chiku Bai is the combination of pine, bamboo, and plum that together mean resilience and resistance to hardship in Japanese culture. Often these are planted together, especially in wintertime. They are also a common motif on Japanese pottery and art.

This product packages pine, bamboo, and plum seeds together with dirt to create an all-inclusive Japanese gardening kit. The package includes an explanation of what the product is and the meaning and symbolism behind it. It is also an authentic representation of Japanese culture through its use of traditional shapes and patterns, as well as origami-style seed packets.

A Clockwork Orange is narrated by a vicious fifteen-year-old droog named Alex, who talks in a brutal invented slang that renders his and his friends’ social pathology. When the state decides to reform Alex in order to “redeem” him, the true meaning of human freedom is called into question.

The book cover illustrates central themes of the story by symbolically illustrating Alex’s struggle against the forces that attempt to control him.

The Museum of Love showcases the good and exposes the dark sides of love. Exhibitions include the traditional, such as love in literature or art, love letters between famous people, or historical origin of traditions and symbols like the diamond ring, as well as racier exhibits about sexual symbolism in literature, homosexuality in Greek mythology, and pornography in art. The logo reflects this duality of good and evil, of innocence and temptation.
